IndiaAI vision was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Global Partnership AI (GPAI) Summit on Dec 23 in New Delhi. He has cleared his vision to set India as a market leader in the field of AI.

Recently, on 07 Mar 2024, the Government approved over 10,300 Crore funds for the India AI program to catalyze India’s AI ecosystem. This financial aid will be laid down in the next five years for AI startups.

It will boost various components of India AI Mission, including, the IndiaAI Compute Capacity, IndiaAI Innovation Centre (IAIC), IndiaAI Datasets Platform, IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, IndiaAI Future Skills, IndiaAI Startup Financing, and Safe & Trusted AI.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, said AI will be a kinetic enabler for India’s digital economy.

The IndiaAI mission will be laid down by the Independent Business Division (IBD) under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), a not-for-profit company set up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), under Section 8 of the Companies Act 2013.

What is IndiaAI Mission?

The IndiaAI Mission is focused on skill development and socio-economic transformation, by generating a comprehensive ecosystem, stimulating AI innovation, and promoting AI applications in various sectors of the country.

Compute Capacity

Over 10,000 GPUs will be procured and deployed through public-private partnerships in order to build a state-of-the-art, scalable public AI compute infrastructure. Also, an AI marketplace will be designed to offer AI as a service and pre-trained models to AI innovators.

IndiaAI Mission

It will mitigate barriers to entry into AI programs and increase AI courses in undergraduate, masters-level, and Ph.D. programs. To provide training at the foundational level, data and AI labs would be established in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India.

IndiaAI Innovation Centre (IAIC)

IAIC will start the development and deployment of indigenous large multimodal models (LMMs) and domain-specific foundational models in critical sectors.

IndiaAI Datasets Platform

It will provide a one-stop solution to streamline access to quality non-personal datasets for startups and researchers interested in AI innovation. It will be developed as a unified data platform.

IndiaAI Application Development Initiative

It will promote AI applications in critical sectors, addressing problem statements sourced from central ministries, state departments, and other institutions.

IndiaAI Startup Financing

It will support and accelerate deep-tech AI startups and provide them with streamlined access to funding to enable futuristic AI projects. It will unlock funding for AI startups from ideation to commercialization.

Safe & Trusted AI

It will support the implementation of responsible and ethical AI initiatives, the creation of indigenous tools and frameworks, self-assessment checklists for innovators, and other guidelines and governance frameworks

Goals of the IndiaAI Mission

Promote AI startups and researchers and expand their work by accessing its commute AI infrastructure to make India a global leader in AI innovation.

Establish a comprehensive AI ecosystem and promote AI applications in different sectors to bring about socio-economic transformation in India.

Why IndiaAI Mission

As per the Statista report, the market for AI technologies is expected to grow over USD 1.8 trillion by 2030. India has the fastest-growing innovation ecosystem in the world and is expected to become the largest IT developer base, surpassing the US by 2027.

According to an EY study, generative AI could boost India’s economy by $1.2-1.5 trillion in the next seven years. The EY study revealed insightful information about how different industries are preparing to use GenAI. 

Around 60% of organizations recognize that Gen AI will have a major impact on their business models, according to a thorough survey that included over 200 C-suite participants.

5. IndiaAI FutureSkills: This component aims to mitigate barriers to entry into AI programs by increasing AI courses in undergraduate, master’s-level, and Ph.D. programs.

Recent Developments and Achievements

– AI Safety Institute: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is setting up an AI Safety Institute under the IndiaAI Mission. This institute will focus on raising domestic capacity, capitalizing on India’s comparative advantages, and plugging into international initiatives.

– ISRO’s AI Lab: ISRO is preparing to launch India’s first AI laboratory in space, developed by Hyderabad-based space technology company TakeMe2Space. This project represents a major leap forward in satellite operations and space-based AI applications.

-GPU Procurement: The Union Cabinet has approved the procurement of over 10,000 GPUs to support the IndiaAI Mission. This move aims to support domestic AI development and reduce reliance on expensive foreign hardware.
