Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, government scheme was launched by Hon’ble Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 22nd January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana, to protect the interest of the girl children and  ensure their education.

The aim of the scheme Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) is to educate citizens of India against gender bias and improve the efficacy rate and welfare services for girls. This program was launched with the initial funding of Rs100 Cr.

The Scheme is laid down, under the control of Ministries of Women and Child Development, Human Resource Development, and Health & Family Welfare.

 

Census conducted during the year 2011, indicates a
significant decline in Child Sex ratio (CSR) recording an all-time low of 918
girls for every 1000 boys. 13 out of 35 states and UTs have CSR lower than the
national average. 

To improve, the CSR government has selected 100 districts based on low Child Sex Ratio as per Census 2011 covering all states / UTs on a
pilot project basis covering at least one district in each state.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP) is a pioneering scheme aimed at addressing gender imbalance and empowering girls through education. Launched to combat female foeticide, promote girl child education, and enhance gender equality, BBBP focuses on three core objectives:

Awareness and Advocacy: Raising awareness about the importance of girl child education and the rights of the girl child through campaigns, workshops, and community engagement.

Financial Support: Providing financial incentives to families for the education and welfare of the girl child, including scholarships and savings schemes.

Safety and Security: Ensuring the safety and protection of girls through initiatives that prevent gender-based violence and promote a safe environment for their growth and development.

Eligibility for BBBP benefits typically extends to families with a girl child, especially those in rural and disadvantaged communities. The scheme targets all Indian states and union territories, focusing on areas with low child sex ratios and high instances of female foeticide.

 

By promoting education and empowering girls, BBBP aims to transform societal attitudes towards gender and nurture a generation of educated and empowered women capable of contributing to India’s socio-economic progress.

(i)      The scheme was launched to tackle discrimination inherent in society, which is being faced by girls and needs a societal change in the mindset of Indian Citizens.

(ii)    The scheme addresses in reduction of the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and also women’s empowerment while eliminating gender-biased inequalities while safeguarding girl children.

(iii)      Improvement in girl education

(iv)    The scheme addresses the CSR issue through mass pan-Indian campaigns while it has multi-faceted government interventions in 100 districts that are labeled as gender-critical.

Eligibility for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

The eligibility criteria for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is as follows

  • The family should have a girl child below 10 years of age.
  • Sukanya Samridhi Account should be available.
  • The girl child should be a resident Indian. NRI citizens do not possess eligibility for the BBBP scheme. 

How to Apply for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme

This process can be easily done by visiting a bank or post office, where this scheme can be chanelized.

Fill up the form for BBBP /SSA by yourself and attach all supporting documents

It is required to submit a filled application form along with all its supporting documents to the concerned authority available to open an account in your girl’s name and for her to reap the benefits in the future. 

Documents Required

There are a few documents that are required for the successful implementation of this scheme. Here is a checklist

 Birth Certificate issued by any recognised government body or a hospital.

Proof of Identity of the Parents, namely Ration Card and Aadhar Card among others.

Proof of Address, namely Utility bills such as telephone bill, electricity bill or water bill and also Driving License or Passport among others.

 A passport size photograph.

(i) Opening of Bank account for girl child which provides financial security to girl child.\

(ii) The A/C remains exempted under 80 C and will remain completely tax-free.

(iii) A decent rate of Interest is being offered by the bank.

(iv) Withdrawal is only allowed for the girl child when she attains the age of 18 years.

(v) Easy savings facility for daughters courtesy of parents or guardians.

(vi) Under the scheme, a savings scheme known as the SSA (Sukanya Samriddhi Account) is a popular scheme.

(vi) Awareness regarding issues of girls and women.

(ix) 8.1% interest rate (per annum) on Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana accounts.

(x) Maximum deposit limit is Rs. 1.50 lakh per annum.
